Religious sanctuaries of the City council of Dumbría, by parishes:
-
Santiago de Berdeogas:
The Church of Santiago de Berdeogas is located in the place of the Grixa, in Berdeogas, and is of Baroque style (s. XVI-XVIII). Little is known of the primitive church, which is supposed to date from the 13th century. In the middle of the 16th century, new writings of the works began to appear. A tragedy that marked this church happened on December 13, 1853, St. Lucia Day, when a strong storm knocked down the belfry, which had been built 28 years earlier, killing five people. Five years after this event, a major overhaul was made leaving it as it is today. "Santiago Day in the morning, turnips to sow"
-
San Pedro de Buxantes:
The Church of San Pedro de Buxantes is located in A Grixa, in Buxantes, and is in Baroque style (17th-18th centuries).
By the vestiges found it is known that the present church is based on another old one. This primitive church must have been built in the late tenth century, when the territorial divisions known as parishes and grouped into archpriests began. All this can be witnessed by the sarcophagus found inside the present church.
One of the main features of this church is the bell tower, which imitates the Clock Tower of the Cathedral of Santiago, with a height of 21.8 m and 35 steps. "Between St. John and St. Peter, collect the rye." The Ermida Virxe das Neves de Buxantes is located in the place of Figueiroa, Buxantes, and belongs to the Romanesque-Neoclassical style. Is dated in Century XV, although underwent a reconstruction in 1780.
A few meters from the hermitage, there was an old farmhouse known as Lugar da Fonte Santa, a place that housed pilgrims from Santiago to Fisterra and those from Noia to Muxía. Although no explanatory documents have been found on the origin of this hermitage. It is assumed that the first chapel, of small dimensions, appears at the end of the 14th or beginning of the 15th century because it is the period of maximum religious splendor in this region.
It is worth mentioning that in 1809, Napoleonic troops took refuge and encamped in this place and, once withdrawn, burned it.
Of particular note is the small rose window located above the main entrance door, widely used in Romanesque and Gothic architecture, so it is possible to think that it is a piece of the primitive chapel. A mathematical condition is fulfilled in this chapel, that of illuminating the altar thanks to the last rays of the sun entering through the rose window. This condition takes place at 9:45 pm on June 21 (summer solstice), illuminating the Tabernacle like the light of a lighthouse.

Santa Baia de Dumbría:
The Church of Santa Baia de Dumbría is located in A Grixa, in Dumbría, and is in Baroque style (17th-18th centuries). The primitive parish church was located in the place Agra of the Adriños, next to the river of the Fragoso, by the way of Canelas. Already in a document of the year 860 it is mentioned that in the land of Nemancos is the church of Santa Eulalia de Donobria. As the original church was deteriorating and far from the rural nuclei, they decided to move it to its current location in 1699. “Sowing in the week of San Román, neither straw nor grain;
sowing in Santa Baia, bigger and more straw ”
-
Santa Uxía do Ézaro:
The Church of Santa Uxía do Ézaro is located in the place of Santa Uxía, next to the dam of the same name and is of Baroque style (18th century). In the past, the residents of Ézaro had to travel for religious services in this church along a tortuous path with steep slopes and more than 3km away, along the so-called "path of Mass". The mortuary transfer to the parish cemetery, located next to the church, was sacrificed and painful; mainly on rainy days. Halfway they had to take a break at the rocky spot known as “A Pedra da Folga”, a name that already speaks for itself. To avoid this costly displacement, in 1926 they built the Ézaro neighborhood cemetery.
The Parish Church of the Ézaro is located in the place of the Ézaro. This church breaks with all the styles present in most of the municipality, since it is a recent church and its Modern style (s.XX).
Before the construction of this church, in Ézaro there was a small hermitage, that of San Sadurniño, which was sold by the parish priest to build the current church. The hermitage building still exists, but does not retain the functionality for which it was created.
-
San Martiño de Olveira:
The Church of San Martiño de Olveira is located in the place of Olveira and is of Romanesque-Baroque style (12th century and with reforms of the 17th-18th centuries). They lack historical documents of this church, but possibly it is of s.XII since its initial style is the Romanesque one.
The religious invocation of this parish is that of San Martiño. Etymologically, Martiño comes from the Roman "Martinus", derived from "Mars", "Martis" (God of War), so it means "dedicated to the god Mars". "For San Martiño the magosto is made, with roasted chestnuts and must."
The Hermitage of Santa Lucía de Olveira is located in the place of Lucín, in Olveira. This chapel is in Baroque-Eclectic style (18th-20th centuries). Lucia is a Latin name derived from "light", "lucis" and this hermitage is dedicated to Saint Lucia, very advocate for diseases of sight. Its origin is very old and there must have lived some hermit or monk who attended the cult. Even the place name of the place of Lucín derives from the invocation to this hermitage. Next to it is the miraculous fountain in which devotees must wash their eyes and dry them with a cloth which they will leave hanging around them.
"For St. Lucia takes out of the night and puts in the day"
-
Santiago de Olveiroa:
The Church of Santiago de Olveiroa is located in the place of Olveiroa. This church is in Romanesque-Baroque-Neoclassical style (12th century with additions from the 18th-19th centuries).
When the French passed through these lands they destroyed all the documents. Some people say that the current church has its origins in a very old one, coinciding with the beginnings of the Camino Xacobeo, in the 9th century, as a chapel or sanctuary. Others identify here the origin of a paleo-Christian Roman temple.
"On the way to Santiago, both the lame and the healthy walk"
-
San Mamede de Salgueiros:
The Church of San Mamede de Salgueiros is located in the place of Salgueiros. This church is in Baroque style (18th century).
On the back façade of the church you can see inscriptions engraved in stone, little connected to each other: of another primitive building.
"May God increase you with St. Vincent, may God take you with St. Mamede"

PARISH CEMETERIES
A cemetery , a cemetery or a pantheon are places where the remains of a person are deposited. Depending on the culture of the place, the deceased will be introduced into coffins, coffins, sarcophagi, or simply wrapped in cloth; to then be buried underground or deposited in niches, mausoleums, crypts or other graves. In addition to this, they are also used to bury the ashes of incinerated people.
The word cemetery comes from the Greek term koimetérion which means bedroom because, according to Christian belief, bodies were slept in the cemetery until the day of resurrection. As a curiosity, tell that Catholic cemeteries are also called cemeteries.
In the City Council of Dumbría there are eight parish cemeteries . It is also something curious, that in each parish there is a parish cemetery per church, except in the parish of Santa Uxía do Ézaro where there are two; one is next to the parish church of the place of Santa Uxía and the other in the place of the Ézaro, in the limit with the council of Cee! Curious this parish !!
